A simple weekly homemaking routine for busy moms at home is a must because of all the tasks we juggle; homeschooling, meals, cleaning, parenting, dealing with toddlers, and the list could go on and on. Having a simple weekly homemaking plan gets rid of the overwhelm and brings peace and order into the home. When peace and order is in the home, there is more time for things that matter most: family relationships. So read on to see how you can create a specific weekly homemaking routine that suites your specific home.
Why Every Busy Mom Needs a Weekly Homemaking Routine
Reduces Decision Fatigue
Us moms have to make an insane amount of decisions on the daily! Have you ever spent a day counting how many decisions you actually make? It's a whole lot! And that's why having a homemaking routine that fits your family is so helpful: it reduces one less decision. Perfect!
Creates a more peaceful home
When things in our home flow smoothly, peace comes along. We all want a peaceful home, right? Peace is so needed, especially for us moms who have children at home all day long.
keeps cleaning manageable
With a homemaking routine, it keeps things manageable and not overwhelming. There's a lot of things that need to get done when keeping a home. It's not that simple. And the more kids you have, the harder it gets. With a weekly homemaking routine, you are able to stay on top of things and not find yourself completely overwhelmed with all the tasks that need to get done.
What is a Weekly Homemaking Routine?
Each day serves a purpose. You complete a simple homemaking task every day - except for one rest day a week - and that keeps you on top of all the daily homemaking tasks that need to get done in a week. When you plan ahead, have a rhythm going, homemaking flows so much better. It's less stressful this way!
Daily Tasks That Keep the Home Running
Here is a quick over view of the tasks that need to get done every day or once every week.
- clean bedrooms
- wash dishes
- wipe table and counters
- sweep and vacuum floors
- mop floors
- clean bathrooms
- laundry
- tidy up main living areas
- dust furniture
- wash bedding
- meal plan
- empty trash
A Simple Weekly Homemaking Routine for Busy Moms
I wrote a post about How to Keep Your House Clean While Homeschooling and in that post, I go over some simple daily rhythms I have that helps keep the house clean. Go check that out for more of a day to day cleaning/living routine.
Example of a Week of Homemaking
Sunday: Day of rest
This is a time of complete rest. No work for you, Mama, and I mean it! Taking a rest day is super important and is actually very helpful. When you rest, you are able to clear your mind, gain more energy, and get a break from the mundane duties. If you want to read more about why taking a rest day is important - especially as a mom- check out this blog post.
Monday: One load of laundry + vacuum any carpet + meal plan
We are a one load of laundry family. I was skeptical of this approach at first, but since giving it a full try, I have never gone back. If you don't practice this already, you need to start! It is life changing - homemaker style! And vacuum all the carpet in your house and spend some time meal planning for the week.
Tuesday: One load of laundry + declutter one room
Declutter one room that hasn't been decluttered in a while. Things get piled up real fast in a home with many kids! Keep up this habit and it will serve you well.
Wednesday: One load of laundry + clean the bathrooms
Clean the toilet, sinks, tub, mirror, take out the trash. Make that bathroom nice and shiny!
Thursday: One load of laundry + wash the bedding
If you have a small family, you won't need to do a load of laundry plus the bedding. Just stick with the bedding. I did that for a long while and it worked great! But my family is getting bigger and that means more laundry for me. So I need to wash a load plus wash the bedding.
Friday: One load of laundry + mop floors
Sweep and mop the floors.
Saturday: One load of laundry + dust surfaces + freshen up the bathrooms
Bathrooms need constant freshening up and today is that day! Dust all the surfaces in each room and get your kids involved!
Daily Non-Negotiables
Here are some everyday tasks that you can add on to your list that will keep your home running smoothly. I have been implementing this for a couple of years now and it has been working really well in our home! I find that if my day has been complete chaos but I get these non-negotiables done, then I'm a happy mama!
- make beds
- one load of laundry
- wash dishes (thankful for my dishwasher!!)
- quick evening reset (mostly the kitchen)
Homeschooling and Homemaking Can Work Together
Homeschooling doesn't mean that homemaking can't be done well throughout the week. Mesh the two together! Assign your kids specific jobs throughout the week and let them learn responsibility and hard work. Assign certain times of the day for cleaning and tidying; don't leave it all for the end of the day and don't leave it all for you to do. Incorporate the cleaning throughout the day. I like to do this by having a clean up time around lunch time and before supper and then a quick tidy at the end of the day. This has been working really well for us.
What If You Miss a Day?
You will miss a day. I miss days. If you're in a really busy season, skip what you missed, move on, and do what needs to be done on the current day. Be gracious and don't guilt trip yourself. This is life! But if you find yourself in a bit of a slower season, add what you missed to the next day. But you need to know your current season. Don't try to do too much, only to be left feeling totally overwhelmed.

Most Important Takeaway
If you only get one thing from this post, I want it to be this: Focus on one homemaking task each day instead of trying to do everything at once.
